Sustainability

The built environment is a complex system that affects the natural world for better or worse. At RKD, we make sure it’s for better.

Sustainability is the backbone of every part of our mission at RKD. We design with purpose, creating environments that tread lightly on the planet while standing strong for generations.

From passive solar strategies to cutting-edge green materials, we integrate environmental intelligence into every project. Our approach balances aesthetic, performance, and responsibility—because great design should feel and do good.

Whether it’s a net-zero building or a LEED-certified commercial space, we believe architecture should give more than it takes. We strive to build a future where thoughtful design leads to lasting impact. We don’t just design spaces—we try to shape a more resilient future.

Our commitment to sustainability goes beyond aesthetics, anchoring every project in environmental integrity, human well-being, and long-term performance. We are constantly guided key performance indicators such as UN Sustainable Development Goals, SBTi and the Paris Agreement as well as international compliance standards such as the European Green Deal the EPBD and Fit for 55.

We specialize in:

  • Green building certification including LEED, BREEAM, WELL, Fitwel
  • Sustainable master planning and Technical Due Diligence
  • Early design solutions to reduce embodied and whole life carbon, maximise energy savings, daylight and views, through regenerative design, passive, and active solutions
  • Whole Building Life Cycle Assessments (LCA)
  • Material comparison studies and Biodiversity Net Gain to optimise resource efficiency and healthy indoor and outdoor environments
  • Whole Life Carbon Assessments (at any stage of a project, including operational phase)
  • Pre-development evaluation and sustainability technical due diligence
  • Post-occupancy evaluation
  • EU Taxonomy Reporting
  • Climate & Energy Assessments
  • Justification for Demolitions

To demonstrate our commitment directly to our clients and stakeholders, we report our scope 1,2 emissions to CDP.

In addition, as part of RKD’s organisational commitment to sustainability, we developed a roadmap to become a carbon neutral practice and have made measurable commitments for both the practice and our clients towards 2025 and 2030.
